  • Is there a difference between Brush Cutters and String Trimmers?

Yes, there is a difference between brush cutters and string trimmers, and it mainly lies in the blade and power. String trimmers use a line of wire, which is quickly rotated to create a small sharp blade and is good for cutting through grass and thin weeds.

Brush cutters, however, use a metal blade with several teeth or blade edges. This is much stronger and can cut through thicker weeds and brambles, brilliant if you have a large area of the brush to clear. Brush cutters also have more power, usually, a larger engine, to enable the power tool to cut through thicker stems.

Do battery-powered trimmers offer the best power?

In recent years, battery-powered power tools have become available on the market, with large lithium batteries. These are brilliant power tools that last 2-3 hours per charge, and give you the flexibility to move around your lawn or land without being tied to a cable.

They also do not give off harmful or smelly fumes as a gas-powered tool will. However, depending on the size of the battery, it may not be the most powerful tool available, compared to its gas and electric competitors.

Will I need to replace the trimmer string?

If you’re purchasing a string trimmer, it’s worth considering the quality of the string wire and how easy it is to replace this. Over time, the string wire can wear thin and weak in places, making it less effective in cutting your lawn and weeds. To check this, make sure the string trimmer is turned off, flip it upside down and take a look at the quality of the string. Usually, a string is replaced by a spool feed or manual change of wire.
